3 WMLES Using Hybrid Methods It can be argued that the earliest applications of LES to wall-bounded flows (Deardorff 1970) used a hybrid method: while the outer layer was resolved by LES, the inner layer was modelled as an equilibrium region with a mixing-length model to parameterize the Reynolds stresses due to the turbulent eddies, which in this region were entirely unresolved. This resulted in the establishment of a logarithmic layer, which supplied the wall-boundary condition. A more explicit RANS/LES coupling was used in the Two-Layer Model by Balaras et al.
